FAIRMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RULES
Fairmont School’s Discipline Plan sets high
standards for student behavior in order to maintain a safe, orderly and
positive school climate. This climate is conducive to teaching and
learning, both academically and socially.
The safety and
well-being of your child is the utmost priority of the Fairmont School
staff. We, therefore, ask your cooperation in helping your child
understand and follow school rules. Listed below are the general rules
and related behaviors of particular concern.
BE IN THE RIGHT PLACE, AT THE RIGHT TIME, DOING THE RIGHT THING
Ø
Do not enter the campus
earlier than 20 minutes prior to the start of school because no
supervision is provided prior to that time.
Ø
Do not travel from the
classroom to any other area of school without a pass.
Ø
No children in the
classroom without teacher supervision.
Ø
When the bell rings,
freeze on the blacktop area, and walk to line when the teacher signals.
No drinks or use of the restroom after the bell.
Ø
Play in designated areas
on the playground.
BE KIND
TO EACH OTHER IN WHAT YOU SAY AND DO
Ø
Treat adults and peers
with respect, valuing differences in others.
Ø
No inappropriate language
or gestures, profanity or vulgarity.
Ø
Be cooperative when given
directions.
ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS
Ø
Be honest – Accepting the
consequences for your own behavior.
Ø
No running or shouting in
the halls, lunch area or patio.
Ø
Use playground equipment
as instructed.
Ø
Play games according to
school rules
Ø
Willful disobedience will
not be tolerated.
Ø
Stealing will not be
tolerated.
TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR SCHOOL BY KEEPING IT NEAT AND CLEAN
Ø
Destruction/defacing of
school property will not be permitted.
Ø
No inappropriate use of
school facilities or equipment.
KEEP HANDS, FEET AND OBJECTS TO YOURSELF
Ø
Play involving bodily
contact is not permitted.
Ø
No throwing sand, rocks,
food or any object not intended for that purpose.
Ø
No fighting or other acts
of aggression (see consequences).
Ø
No spitting.
Ø
No writing or drawing on
yourself or other students.
Ø
No chasing or tag games.
BRING ONLY
APPROPRIATE ITEMS TO SCHOOL
Ø
No toys or games. No
portable music/video player, MP3’s, IPOD’s or any similar devices.
Ø
No gum.
Ø
No dangerous or disruptive
items.
Ø
No skateboards, roller
skates, or roller blades.
Ø
Bikes for grades 4, 5, and
6 only, appropriately locked.
Ø
No sports equipment
without special permission from the administrator.
Ø
No hats or sunglasses.
BICYCLES/SKATEBOARDS/ROLLER SKATES/ROLLER BLADES
Ø
Students in grades 4
through 6 may ride their bikes to school if they have been checked and
licensed.
Ø
Bicycle helmets must be
worn.
Ø
Unsafe riding practices
may result in the denial of this privilege.
Ø
Bicycles are to be walked
on sidewalks and on school grounds.
Ø
Students are not allowed
to lock up with a friend.
Ø
The use of skateboards,
scooters, roller skates, and roller blades on school grounds IS
PROHIBITED AT ALL TIMES.
CELLPHONES
Ø
Must be turned off at all
times.
Ø
Cannot be used during
school hours.
Ø
Must be in backpack.
Ø
Only used for emergencies
before/after school.
DRESS STANDARDS
Fairmont’s
dress standards are consistent with Bernardo Yorba Middle school’s
“Dress for Success” program. Along with our high expectations for
behavior and academic performance, they reflect our school motto,
“Together in Excellence.” Our high standards create an environment for
learning that has earned for us the designation “California
Distinguished School.”
1.
Children should come to school dressed appropriately for the task
of learning, demonstrating their awareness of the importance of
education.
2.
Children’s attire should promote an environment of respect. We
would like your cooperation in promoting this environment of respect, by
sending your child to school wearing shirts with positive messages.
3.
All clothing should be in good repair and of appropriate size.
4.
Top wear – All tops must have sleeves, must be long enough to be
tucked in, and must have crew-like or collared necks.
5.
Sweatshirts and jackets are considered to be outerwear.
Appropriate top wear must be worn under them.
6.
Bottom wear – All pants, shorts, skirts, and skorts must fit
properly at the waist and must not be worn lower than the top of the
hip. They should not be un-hemmed or frayed and should be of
appropriate length. Shorts, skirts and skorts may not be shorter than
mid-thigh. Bottom wear must be appropriately belted and secure at the
waist. Long skirts and long dresses are not allowed.
7.
Girls should wear shorts or opaque tights under dresses or skirts
for all P.E. days.
8.
To prevent children from wearing clothing, accessories or styles
that may interfere with their own safety and well-being or that may
disrupt the learning process, the following are NOT
ALLOWED:

Flip flops, sandals,
open-toed or backless shoes, cowboy boots, high heels, platforms or
other shoes which might interfere with safe footing
·
Jewelry or accessories
that constitute a distraction or a safety hazard, e.g. large hoop or
dangling earrings, studded apparel, chains, and key chains on backpacks
·
Apparel, backpacks,
jewelry, or accessories which display words or pictures relating to
alcohol, drugs, tobacco, guns, gangs, violence, obscenity, vulgarity,
including skulls and cross bones.
·
Apparel, jewelry, or
accessories which promote racial, ethnic, or religious prejudice
·
Shirts or tops that are
too tight or revealing, which do not reach below the waist, or which
allow underclothing to show, e.g. open mesh tops, tank tops, sleeveless
tops, V neck tops, spaghetti straps, low-cut necklines, oversized sleeve
openings, midriff tops, backless tops, short tops, or sheer garments

Long dresses or long
skirts
·
Skull and cross bones on
clothing, backpacks, shoes, etc.
·
Extremes in style or color
of hair (No Mohawks)
·
Make-up
·
Acrylic/fake nails
·
Hats
·
Sunglasses
PLEASE NOTE:
A student coming to school with
inappropriate dress will be required to call his/her parent/guardian to
bring a change of clothes, and a Dress Code Infraction will be given to
the student.
UNIFORM DESCRIPTIONS
Top
Wear:
Uniform shirts are white, ash, navy, or burgundy
polos with a Fairmont logo. All sweatshirts: crew, zippered, and hooded
must be uniform sweatshirts with the Fairmont logo or plain navy
blue, burgundy, or gray sweatshirts with no logos. During the school
year additional top wear may be purchased. Order forms will be
available and should be turned in by the first of the month for delivery
by the middle of the month. All top wear must be size-appropriate.
Bottom Wear:
Uniform bottom wear consists of navy blue and
khaki tan pants and shorts for boys and girls, as well as skorts,
skirts, and jumpers for girls. All bottom wear is made of cotton or
cotton blends. Corduroy is acceptable, or dark blue denim. Shorts,
skirts, and skorts must not be shorter than mid-thigh. All pants,
shorts, skirts, and skorts must fit properly at the waist and must not
be worn lower than the top of the hip. They should be hemmed and not
frayed and should be of appropriate length. Shorts, skirts and skorts
may not be shorter than mid-thigh. Bottom wear must be appropriately
belted and secure at the waist. Long skirts and long dresses are not
allowed.
Footwear:
Please refer to your Fairmont dress code
guidelines in your back-to-school packets.
Outerwear:
Fairmont logo sweatshirts are available in a
variety of sizes and styles. Please write your child’s name inside all
outerwear. Uniform shirts with collar showing must be worn under the
outerwear.
PLEASE NOTE:
A student coming to school with inappropriate
dress will be required to call his/her parent/guardian to bring a change
of clothes.
FAIRMONT BEHAVIOR CITATIONS
Students will be issued a citation for
repeated or serious infractions of school rules. We ask that
parents discuss the misconduct with their child, sign the
citation, and return it to school the following day.
CONSEQUENCES: Grades 1-6
First Citation - 30
minutes detention after school
Parent/Teacher/Phone Conference
Second Citation - 30
minutes detention after school
Parent/Teacher/Phone Conference
Third Citation - 30
minutes detention after school, 2 days
Parent/Teacher/Phone Conference
Fourth Citation - 30
minutes detention after school, 2 days
Parent/Teacher/Student/Administrator Conference to develop
an individual behavior contract
AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR OR FIGHTING
These consequences will be enforced fairly and
consistently, regardless of who started the fight.

First occurrence will be a behavior citation and parent
notification letter
·
Second occurrence will be an automatic one to three day
suspension
SUSPENSION
Suspension is a serious matter and is used when
misconduct is chronic and/or severe. Under the California State
Education Code (48900) suspension from school may result from any of the
following actions:

Caused/attempted/threatened physical injury
ü
Possessed/sold/furnished a dangerous device
ü
Possessed/used/sold/furnished drugs/alcohol
ü
Sold/furnished alleged drugs or alcohol
ü
Robbery/extortion
ü
Graffiti/vandalism to school/private property
ü
Theft of school/private property (or attempt)
ü
Possessed or used tobacco
ü
Obscene act/habitual profanity/vulgarity
ü
Sold/offered to sell drug paraphernalia
ü
Disruption/defiance of school authority
ü
Receipt of stolen school/private property
ü
Possessed/sold or otherwise furnished any firearm (this
includes facsimiles), knife, explosive or other dangerous object
(subject to expulsion)
ü
Sexual harassment and other discriminatory act (Grades 4-6
only)
ü
Hate violence
DETENTION
Detention will be 2:45p.m. – 3:15 p.m. on
Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Main Commons. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT
REPORT TO DETENTION AS ASSIGNED WILL HAVE THEIR TIME DOUBLED. If
absent, the student will serve the detention on the next scheduled
detention period upon his/her return to school. If the student arrives
at detention 10 or more minutes late, another detention will be
assigned. Parents must arrange for transportation after
detention.
REFERRALS
Referrals from noon supervisors at lunch recess
will be handled through the office of the principal.
TARDINESS
Fairmont is committed to quality education and
student tardiness disrupts the educational program. When a student is
tardy three times within any four week period, a 30 minute after
school detention will be assigned.
